After a summer with the Springfield Drifters, Logan Honma is looking to make waves this fall with the University of Southern California baseball team. Following graduation from Pearl City High School in May, Honma packed his bags and left a few weeks later to Springfield, his home for the summer.
As a Hawaii native, Honma plays to represent his home state and his family while competing in the mainland. “It means a lot,” he says to “[represent] something bigger than yourself.” Not only does it mean a lot to him personally, but Honma says he understands the importance that he carries for his community.
Honma says he first fell in love with the game when he started playing around five years old. He has enjoyed getting to make a lot of new friends throughout the process and learn more about life through athletics. When asked about his favorite memory with the Drifters, Honma expressed how much fun he had fishing with his friends on his days off.
Ranked in the top 10 in Hawaii’s class of 2025 ranking, Honma came into this summer looking to carry over the momentum from his high school career. In his first year playing in the West Coast League, the Hawaii native accomplished a stellar debut, playing in 45 games in the season.
In the batter’s box, Honma holds his own despite being among the youngest players in the league. He holds the fifth most RBI on the team with 16. He demonstrated his composure at the plate by earning 33 hits on the season, including 10 doubles. With a keen eye at the plate, Honma shows his poise by earning 87 walks. Between 17 stolen bases and his ability to get on base in multiple ways, Honma has made his way around the bases to score an impressive 26 times to help the Drifters offensively.
Honma secured the corner defensively for the Drifters, achieving an impressive .938 percentage from the field while playing third base. On top of overall having fun in the position, Honma likes playing in the infield because “you’re close to everything and there’s a lot more action than the outfield
Going into his freshman year at USC, Honma has used this summer to gain confidence and knowledge from the older players on the Drifters roster. He feels like playing against other collegiate athletes has been a helpful learning experience and will benefit him long after the summer.
If given the chance, Honma says he would happily return to the Drifters team. Speaking about his first year in Springfield, Honma says “I made a lot of friends over here and I really enjoyed my time.”
Honma’s best day at the plate this year came on June 4th versus the Bend Elks. He went three for five at the plate on two doubles, and brought in three RBI while coming across the place once himself.
In his final game of the season for the Drifters, Honma ended with a splash versus the Corvallis Knights with two hits, including one double. He dashed around the bases to accumulate one more stolen base and one run scored.
