By Steve Mims

Less than three weeks remain until Opening Day, and Springfield has a number of exciting promotions ready to welcome fans to Hamlin Sports Complex during the opening month of the West Coast League schedule.

Year four for the Drifters begins when the Walla Walla Sweets visit on May 30th to kick off a three-game series at home. Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon will throw out the first pitch before the Drifters face the Sweets.

The opener is also Babe Ruth Night, as all Babe Ruth players and coaches wearing their uniform or hat will get into the game for free. Local Babe Ruth teams will be recognized during the opening ceremony.

First Responders Appreciation Night is May 31st, as the Springfield Police Department will coordinate a Touch-A-Truck display with police cars, SWAT vehicles, drones, and more! First responders will get in free by showing their badge, and the Party Deck will be reserved for Springfield Police Department employees and their families. The first pitch will come from retired K-9 Nord and Officer Douglas.

Bend arrives at Hamlin for a three-game series beginning June 3rd, which is Drifters Cap Night— the first 300 fans will receive a free Drifters Cap!

The series concludes on June 5th, which is Food For Lane County Night. Fans who bring six non-perishable food items in donation to FFLC will receive a free general admission ticket. Three food items earn a half-price admission ticket.

The eight-game opening homestand concludes against the NW Star Nighthawks on June 6-7. Drifters Dog Days is June 6th, partnered with Greenhill Humane Society. “Drifter Dog Passes” can be purchased for $2, and “Pup Cups” will be sold at the concession stands with proceeds going to Greenhill. There will be a Limited Edition Drifters Dog Bandana giveaway for the first 100 pups through the gates!

The next homestand, June 13-15 against Portland, features post-game fireworks on June 14th and a special Father’s Day game on June 15th, where dads will receive a free drink ticket.

The June home schedule concludes from the 20th-22nd with a three-game set against the Cowlitz Black Bears. Teacher Appreciation Night will take place on June 21st, with all teachers receiving free admission with their School ID. Military Appreciation Night is June 22nd, where all military personnel receive free admission with an ID badge, and the first 300 fans will receive a custom Drifters Camo Cap.

Jeff Lyle takes over as head coach of the Drifters, who look to contend in the South Division this year. The 59-game summer schedule features 32 home games at Hamlin, with all games starting at 6:35 p.m., except for Sundays, which start at 4:05 p.m.
